This is a drawing I did over a photograph in Illustrator. It was for a friend to use as a quilt pattern.

Note: The black background is not intentional – it’s a png file on a transparent background. I find the png file format sometimes behaves oddly when uploaded to some applications, e.g., Cafe Press and Imagekind — and also, I see now, flickr too. Regardless, I think the black adds something to the image that was missing before.

I suggested to my friend that red lines could be the top stitching for the quilt rather than the cut lines since they don’t match up to the coloured “pattern pieces”. With all my work I tend to use patterns as a guide, rather than something exact to be followed and this piece is no exception. (It’s something that took My Significant Other a little while to get used to, because it’s the same approach I take to cooking. Recipes are for inspiration, not for following. )
