Stained glass 03: Celtic knot

This piece was accepted into the 2008 summer student open exhibition at South Hill Park. Another piece, a roundel with a pair of large quartz crystals embedded was also accepted but I haven’t got a very good photo of it. They’re both on display until the first week of September.

The celtic knot was based on drawings by George Bain, a well-known Scottish calligrapher who unravelled and shared the secrets of Celtic designs. The piece is made of cobalt-blue glass with black-backed copper foil with a black patina applied to the solder after assembly. I decided to do this piece in order to teach myself how to cut curves … after 67 curvaceous pieces, I think I got the hang of it. It’s surprisingly unsymmetrical, you would expect the pieces to be exactly the same on both sides but they not (and not all of that is due to my ineptitude in cutting, either).
