Stained glass 016: Celtic Cat

The Celtic Cat is an original design from my series of Welsh animals, based on story of Merlin in The Mabinogion. These started from an art college assignment, but I’ve carried on because I enjoy doing them. I’ve made the “Salmon of Wisdom” twice, one original and one adapted from the Book of Kells as interpreted by the great George Bain) and a celtic pony, which is also based on a George Bain drawing.

The clear glass has an iridescent sheen and is quite pretty. I was intending to use several different types of clear textured glass, but it seemed too disjointed — using the same type of clear glass for the background unified the image and doesn’t fight with the four different types of coloured glass in the body. The lime green eyes came out of the scrap bin and give, in my opinion, a perfect touch. The Cat has quite a bold personality and a less vibrant shade wouldn’t have done him justice.
