Mixed media 02: Envelope pictures

These collages are from our first morning’s work at the West Dean mixed media course in early June. Jane, our tutor, gave us the task of looking at things differently. She piled a heap of, well, “rubbish” is a bit strong but basically it was a load of paper, packaging and ordinary household ephemera … that which normally gets thrown away without a second glance.

I was blown away by a practice piece that one of the other students did based on the patterns from bits of paper torn from ordinary junk mail envelopes, so I promptly had a go myself. It was such a revelation to see the extraordinary variety of patterns to be found in common envelopes.

The middle picture is a rough approximation of a quilt pattern.

The final piece at the bottom has a wash of white paint over the top.
