Printmaking 01: Collagraph inspired by the Queen of the Night

This is the collagraph plate after its first inking and pulling the first impressions. I’ve added PVA (“Elmer’s”) glue to the hand because the hand wasn’t distinct enough. The additional PVA will wipe cleaner than the textured surfaces and provide a more hand-like image. The initial prints pulled from the plate weren’t entirely successful.

The Queen of the Night is a terracotta goddess from the ancient Near East (Mesopotamia) also known as ‘The Burney Relief’. I’m surprised the experts describe it as “large”; it’s only about 14 inches/40cm tall at best, not much larger than the collagraph plate of her hand.
